Seminar Topic:A Woman’s Perspective of Te Kingitanga The Honourable Nanaia Mahuta of Waikato‐Maniapoto and Ngā Puhi descent is currently a member of parliament for the Hauraki‐Waikato Electorate, Labour Party and spokesperson for Māori Social Development. She has held numerous parliamentary roles and was first elected to Parliament in the 1996 elections when she became a list MP. Nanaia grew up at Waahi Pā, Huntly and attended Rakaumangamanga and Diosecan School in Hamilton, she also completed a BA and MA in Social Anthropology from Auckland University and is a trustee for the Waikato‐Tainui endowed College Trust. Nanaia has strong family links to Te Kīngitanga, being the daughter of Sir Robert Te Kotahitanga Mahuta (1939 – 2001) who was the adopted son of King Korokī and the elder brother of Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu (1931 - 2006). Her mother Lady Eliza Raiha Mahuta (nee Edmonds) (2 April 1942 ‐ 23 March 2010) is her Ngā Puhi connectionto Ngāti Manu and Ngāti Rangi, Ngawha, Te Otaiamai o te Marangai.
