Seminar Topic: Treaty claims and self-determination Sir Edward reviews the hopes for self determination of those Māori promoting Māori Land reform and the establishment of the Tribunal in the 1970s and considers whether the current practices and processes of the Tribunal, Court and Crown affecting land and Treaty matters, now support or negate that goal. He comments as well on Māori Party policy to review the settlement process. Sir Edward of Ngāti Raukawa/Kauwhata/Rangitāne, is a former Judge and Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court, was Chairperson of the Waitangi Tribunal for over 20 years and is credited with establishing the Tribunal, and served as a High Court Judge and Commissioner of the New Zealand Law Commission. He was a judge from 1974 until his retirement in 2007. He has honorary degrees from Victoria, Waikato and Massey Universities. Following his retirement he led the consultation programme on the formation of tribal authorities, chaired the Foreshore and Seabed Review Panel and has advised on developments in Philippines and the Pacific. He now mainly serves as an advisor for his own iwi.
