MANU AO (AG08) - Dr Monty Soutar, Ngā Tama Toa

Ngā Tama Toa - The Price Of Citizenship: Compiling The Book And The Lessons Learnt From The Māori Contribution To World War Two On behalf of the Ngā Taonga ā ngā Tama Toa Trust, Monty wrote the fascinating story of C Company of the Māori Battalion that was a finalist in this year's Montana NZ Book Awards and won the history section of the Massey University Ngā Kupu Ora, Inaugural Māori Book Awards. The C Company story is told through personal recollections, eyewitness accounts, numerous anecdotes and fantastic photographs. At times heart rending, at times heart warming, this impressive book captures the spirit of the Māori Battalion. Monty will speak about the challenges of putting this taonga together as well as explaining the relevance of the Price of Citizenship to Māoridom today. Monty is a guardian of the Alexander Turnbull Library and a member of the National Archives Council. He has significant experience in historical research and vast knowledge in dealing with Māori Land Court records and has worked widely with iwi and Māori communities. He was appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal in 2002 and is presently the Chief Executive of Te Runanga o Ngāti Porou.
